چکیده

Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) and other relatively small airborne platforms are being increasingly pressed into service to perform broadband Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Typically, these smaller platforms do not have enough space for a dish antenna and gimbal mechanism needed for a high-data-rate telemetry link. This paper presents a unique approach to steering a beam from a broadband conformal aperture that is suitable for space-restricted applications. This approach does not use expensive T/R modules or electronic phase shifters and yields a costeffective phased array solution with very low size, weight and power (SWAP). A JEM prototype was recently flown by NASA on a sounding rocket mission where a continuous data link was maintained to a TDRSS satellite throughout the entire flight from launch through splashdown and recovery. The paper will present architectures for both 1-D and 2-D beam steering.

Architectures for Ku-band Broadband Airborne Satellite Communication Antennas

This paper describes different architectures for a broadband antenna for satellite communication on aircraft. The antenna is a steerable (conformal) phased array antenna in Ku-band (receive-only). First the requirements for such a system are addressed. Subsequently a number of potential architectures are discussed in detail: a) an architecture with only optical true time delays, b) an architect...

Transmit/Receive Module Packaging: Electrical Design Issues

adar systems realized with a phased array antenna offer several advantages over systems using a conventional parabolic dish or mechanically steered antenna. These advantages include the production of directive beams that can be rapidly repositioned electronically, the generation of multiple independently steered antenna beams from a common aperture, the ability to make antennas conformal with t...

Design of a Ring Resonator-based Optical Beam Forming Network for Phased Array Receive Antennas

A novel squint-free ring resonator-based optical beam forming network (OBFN) for phased array antennas (PAA) is proposed. It is intended to provide broadband connectivity to airborne platforms via geostationary satellites. In this paper, we present the design of the OBFN and its control system. Our goal is to deliver large bandwidth Ku-band connectivity between antennas, mount conformal to the ...

A K-band phased array antenna system employing photonic true-time delay module

A novel 1-to-64 (6-bit (2 6 )) optical true-time delay module that can provide linear time delays ranging from 0 to 443.03 picoseconds is presented. The bandwidth of the fully packaged module is determined to be as high as 539 GHz. This true-time delay module is employed to control an eight-element K-band phased array antenna system. Far field patterns covering 18 GHz to 26.5 GHz are measured a...
